Wichita Alarm Permit: Cost, False Alarm Fees and How to Register

In Wichita, an alarm monitored by an alarm company must be registered with the city before you use it (the code allows 5 business days after installation): $25 a year, with the renewal fee waived after a year with no false alarms. Self-monitored burglar alarms are excluded. The first false alarm each registration year is free; security false alarms then cost $40, rising to $350 each from the 10th, and an unregistered system adds a $150 penalty.[1,2]

Checked against official Wichita sources on October 28, 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with Wichita Police Alarm Administration at (316) 268-4196 (Alarm Administration); 1-855-215-2943 (False Alarm Program permit and billing support) before you rely on them.

If false alarms keep happening: Police and fire response can be suspended if your address has more than 6 false alarms in a registration year or unpaid fees. You get a certified-mail notice at least 30 days before the suspension date. To restore response you pay or resolve what you owe and send a certificate from a city-licensed alarm company that the system was inspected and you were retrained; response resumes within 5 business days after the administrator receives both. Unpaid fees get $10 late fees at 60 and 90 days; the code allows collections after 90 days following notice, while the city page says 120 days.[1,2]

Charges without a permit

  • $150 — charged administrative penalty when an alarm from an unregistered or unrenewed system reaches the communications center (the code also applies it after the city notifies you to register or renew). In addition to false-alarm fees. Separately, violating the alarm chapter is a misdemeanor punishable on conviction by a fine of up to $500.[2]

Good to know

  • Self-installed and self-monitored systems: A security (burglar) alarm that isn't monitored by an alarm monitoring company is excluded from the city's alarm rules, so a self-monitored burglar alarm doesn't need a permit. Monitored systems must be registered. Smoke alarms, alarms that only sound inside, vehicle alarms and unconnected personal safety devices are also excluded; medical-only alarms don't register unless used for something else.[2,1]
  • Panic and hold-up alarms: Panic and hold-up alarms share the security-alarm fee schedule, but monitoring companies must pass them to dispatch immediately instead of first trying to verify them.[1,2]
  • Before police are sent: Before asking for a police response, your monitoring company must try to verify each alarm with enhanced call verification (more than one call). Hold-up, panic, medical and fire signals are exempt and must be passed on immediately.[2]
  • Not sure which rules apply to your address?: Not confirmed. The city's alarm page has no address lookup; the rules apply inside Wichita city limits.[1]

Avoiding false alarms

  • Make sure everyone who has a code knows how to disarm the system and cancel an alarm.
  • Keep your monitoring company's contact list up to date so they can reach someone quickly.
  • Let your monitoring company know before guests, contractors or pet sitters use the house.
  • Check that doors and windows are fully closed before you arm the system.
  • Replace low sensor batteries promptly.
