Do You Need an Alarm Permit in Jackson? False Alarm Fees and Rules

Jackson does not require a permit or registration for home alarms. Your first two false alarms each calendar year are free; the third costs $25, and the fourth and every one after that cost $100.[1]

Checked against official Jackson sources on October 28, 2026. Rules and fees change, so confirm with Jackson's alarm administrator before you rely on them.

Jackson alarm rules at a glance

Where these rules applyThese rules apply to alarms at homes and businesses inside Jackson city limits. If you live outside the city (for example in unincorporated Hinds County or a nearby town like Ridgeland, Clinton or Pearl), Jackson's rules do not apply.[1]
Fee exemptionsYou won't be charged if you or someone you designate calls the city's communications center and cancels before police or firefighters arrive. An alarm set off by someone working on the system doesn't count as a false or unknown alarm if the city's communications center was told beforehand, with the alarm company or user and the workers identified, the exact location, and the estimated completion time. False alarms don't include activations caused by weather or other events beyond your control. Separately, an unknown-cause alarm isn't charged if it can be shown to have been caused by a utility service disruption, a vehicle hitting a utility pole, or storm conditions. We found no senior or low-income fee waivers.[1]

False alarm fees in Jackson

False alarms are counted over each calendar year[1]. Each fee below is charged per false alarm.

Residential false alarms

False alarmFee
1st–2ndFree[1]
3rd$25[1]
4th and each after$100[1]

Residential unknown-cause alarms (counted separately from false alarms)

False alarmFee
1st–4thFree[1]
5th–8th$25[1]
9th and each after$50 (unknown-cause alarms are counted separately from false alarms, per year; warning letters start with the 2nd)[1]

If false alarms keep happening: Jackson's alarm ordinance does not say police will stop responding after too many false alarms. If you don't pay a false-alarm fee within 30 days, the city can sue to collect it.[1]

Good to know

  • Self-installed and self-monitored systems: Not confirmed. Jackson's code does not say anything specific about self-installed or self-monitored alarms. Any alarm that brings police or firefighters can count toward false-alarm fees. Automatic dialers that call the city's 911 center directly are not allowed.
  • Panic and hold-up alarms: Jackson has no separate rule for panic or hold-up alarms. A false robbery alarm counts toward the same yearly false-alarm fees as a burglar alarm.[1]
  • Before police are sent: Not confirmed. Jackson's city alarm code doesn't require alarm companies to confirm an alarm before police are sent. We haven't researched whether any Mississippi state rule adds a verification requirement.
  • Not sure which rules apply to your address?: Not confirmed. We did not find an official Jackson address lookup for alarm rules. Check that your address is inside Jackson city limits.

Avoiding false alarms

  • Make sure everyone who has a code knows how to disarm the system and cancel an alarm.
  • Keep your monitoring company's contact list up to date so they can reach someone quickly.
  • Let your monitoring company know before guests, contractors or pet sitters use the house.
  • Check that doors and windows are fully closed before you arm the system.
  • Replace low sensor batteries promptly.
