Where we live, we are getting those promising glimpses that remind us winter won’t last forever. The snowdrops are popping up out of the ground with their dainty white flowers, the frogs are chirping loudly in the pasture, and I see green buds on the rosebushes in the front yard. With all of these signs of spring, however, can you guess where my mind goes? No, not spring…summer!

Yes, I am thinking about summer and summer projects both inside and out. Let the list making begin! And I’m not alone. Summer is the most popular time of year for home renovation projects, and believe me, there are plenty of folks in the planning stages right now.

So that’s why we’re going to talk about renovations while it’s technically still winter (no matter what the frogs or flowers say).

Upgrade your home to a smart home
If you’re going to be remodeling this summer, consider giving your home a serious tech upgrade with some home automation features. You’ve heard of smart homes? Now’s your chance to make yours one of them.

How “smart” you want your home to be is up to you, but when it comes to home automation, the sky is practically the limit. You can choose to have lights turn off and on remotely or mood lighting for different times of day, for example, or have soothing music softly start and gradually increase in volume to wake you up in the mornings. Do an Internet search for home automation features, and you’ll see just how far you can take it.

Not sure where to start?
If you’re not sure where to start thinking about home automation, start with a conversation with your home security provider. These days, home security providers do much more than simply help to protect your home from burglars! The biggest home security companies have evolved into home automation providers. And home automation lets you:

  • Access your home security remotely, unlocking a door for a repairman then locking it up again when he or she leaves…all from your desk at work
  • Keep an eye on kiddos who get home from school before you leave the office
  • Monitor your pets from afar
  • Schedule lights to turn off and on as needed, and your thermostat too

Plus home security cameras help you keep an eye on what’s going on inside and outside of your home, whether you’re there or not. In addition to all of those conveniences, you’re also provided with fire, smoke, carbon monoxide and even flood prevention.

Finally, tapping into the conveniences of home automation can even help you cut costs—which might just help you justify that remodel project to begin with!
